Abstract:
Annual rice consumption per capita in 2014 was decreased to 2.1kg (3.1%) compared to that of 2013 and it was reduced to 65.1kg in Korea. On the other hand, rice consumption of processing area have been expanding to 3,968 billion won and its increasing rate reached to 53.8% compared to 1,832 billion won in 2008. Especially, aceptic-packaged cooked rice (APCR) and cold rice market was increased from 160 billion won in 2008 to 392 billion won in 2014. Its increasing rate reached to 59.2% compared to that of 2008. Reflecting social change of rice consumption trends, rice breeders have been trying to develop the various varieties such as plain rice and processing rice to increase rice consumption. As the results, Jungmo1017, the pioneer variety for APCR in Korea, was developed in 2011. The heading date of this variety is August 16, mid-late maturing variety. It has good palatability index of cooked rice and low protein content (6.4%) and amylose content (18.0%). The milled rice of this variety used as low material for production of ACPR by some company in Korea. However, Jungmo1017 don’t has the resistance to disease and insect pest. So, Korean rice breeder developed another variety Misomi suitable for APCR. And also, Misomi is a variety suited for eco-friendly fertilizer-saving cultivation because it has multiple resistance to rice major disease such as blast, bacterial blight, rice stripe virus, lodging tolerance and high yielding potential. Due to the excellent eating quality of warm, cold and ACPR, this variety can be used as a processing rice and it may use as the variety meet the needs of the various consumer such as farmer, rice processors, rice market and homemakers.
