Abstract:
What do long-term fixed plot studies provide that other types of studies cannot provide? A tempting answer is ‘information about soil stewardship.’ This is because even though most long-term studies are not designed with the sole or even primary intent of measuring soil change, they have provided the bulk of the data used to develop our mechanistic understanding of how management factors alter soils and soil function. This poster will review how thoughts about long-term trials have and are evolving and consider inherent strengths and weaknesses that various approaches to experimental design and analysis provide. Special attention will be paid to the Morrow Plots and their legacy.
