Session Description: Agroecology has a long history, but has begun to take on connotations of narrowly defined “alternative” cropping systems. This symposium aims to bring back the original definition of agroecology, where robust ecological principles are applied to study diverse agroecosystems. This approach offers a means to evaluate integrated agronomic systems for their balance between crop yields with the environment and society. Diverse global cropping systems will be presented that provide agronomic benefits while enhancing ecosystem services. Systems will be explored that provide improved biodiversity, integrated pest management, economic optimization, crop and animal integration, and water conservation.  We will also explore the new training paradigms that are needed both from participatory extension approaches to graduate training.

Approved for 2.5 CM CEUs.
