The most recent farm bill allows those states that have laws in place to legally research industrial hemp (Cannibus sativa).  Kentucky is one such state.  The grain and vegetative parts of the plant have many uses that range from manufacturing of composite materials to medications.  In 2014, thirteen Italian cultivars were evaluated for fiber and seed production at three locations across the state.  Data across all three locations showed no differences in production.  However significant differences were present among cultivar within location.  Poor seed quality, late planting date, and drought most likely affected yields.  This study did provide groundwork needed for future research with industrial hemp.
