Abstract:
The Trimble Soil Information System (SIS) is being used to map soil at an industrial agricultural scale on 6 continents. The SIS provides a rapid means of characterizing the 3D attributes of the soil using an objective, repeatable, and transferable method. This makes the SIS practical to use for decision support at the field scale for precision agriculture applications.  The information products are provided as a service via regional data collectors and interpreted from an agronomic context by the agronomists and soil scientists who work for the grower. Work is underway to create a scale and knowledge connection between the SIS and the NRCS Soil Survey. This provides opportunities for consultants to expand and improve their ability to assist growers as potential service providers and/or as agronomic consultants.
