Serving as an Expert Witness.

About 4 years ago, my son, who has a law degree contacted me about an opportunity to become an Expert Witness related to my work with special technologies such as remote sensing, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (G)S). He informed me about a website called “The Round Table Group” that provides the opportunity for lawyers to link up with potential Expert Witnesses for all types of specialties. I filled out the requested information plus added my resume. The phone rings about once every two months with an opportunity to become involved in a variety of court cases.  I have made it a practice to be involved in only 2 active cases at any one time.

I have had an interesting variety of cases where I served as an expert witness involving chemical damage to crops, sediment causing damage to a business, a boundary dispute between two agricultural lands and patients filed on different aspects of precision agriculture.

The work requires that one stays current on their discipline by staying involved with professional societies, reading current literature on spatial technologies and visiting with experts involved in the topics pertaining to each case. It is challenging but also very rewarding in that one is doing something useful and it provides extra income for family travel experiences.
