NutrientStar is a program initiated in 2014 by the Environmental Defense Fund for the purpose of reviewing and characterizing nitrogen management tools and products. The effort involves a project management team and review panel of ten scientists and consultants with diverse scientific, technical and practical expertise. One goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of N management tools and practices by developing protocols for field strip trials to test the performance of these N management tools for their potential to improve upon producer practices. Another aspect of the program is to assemble a literature review of commercial products so that consultants and producers can readily consider the effectiveness of the various products to increase nitrogen use efficiency and producer profitability.  Several tools and products have worked through the evaluation process and more are undergoing testing in field and strip trials. The program aims to educate producers about the conditions where N management tools can best contribute to fertilizer optimization goals, and help guide producer decisions about which tools may be most appropriate for their regions and crops.
