Rate, source, timing and placement of fertilizer can all have a great impact on the effectiveness of fertilizing any crop.  This is especially true when fertilizing agronomic crops such as cotton and peanut on sandy and low nutrient soils of the southeast.  Each of the 4Rs can be examined separately, for example nitrogen sidedress sources on cotton. In other examples, timing is critical, such as micronutrient applications like boron foliar fed on peanut.  And in other examples, more than one of the 4Rs have to be considered together, such as calcium applications on peanut.  The reasons for the each of these considerations will also be discussed. For example, the source and timing of calcium applications on peanut is influenced by the solubility of the calcium in different sources and the time of need for calcium by the developing peanut.  Proper fertilizer rates are usually determined by soil testing but can be affected by source, timing and placement.  Special placement issues such as starter fertilizers and fertigation will be discussed. In addition, fertilizer additives to improve the effectiveness of certain fertilizer sources will be examined.
