Cover crops have drawn a lot of attention over the past several years and matching producers needs and expectations with goals of agronomists and conservationists has not always been easy nor practical. Although the use of cover crops predate World War II agronomic crop consultants still do not know the best criteria for species selection and management practices for the cover crop and cash crop within their geographic region.  Expectations of the producers are often heightened by testimonials from other producers citing tremendous changes in production costs and yield through changes in soil characteristics.   Often these are localized management practices that do not translate well across large geographical areas.   This seminar will focus on what the basic objectives of why cover crops are grown:   erosion control, nutrient management, grazing, building soil health and depending upon the objectives of the producer how we can match those objectives with current available cover crops species and management practices.   For each objective the method and timing of establishing and terminating cover crops will be addressed along with the associated cost and risk.   Crop management considerations of cash crop planting date, maturity selection, and harvest will be included.
