Abstract:
Fluorescence excitation-emission spectrophotometry with parallel factor analysis (EEM/PARAFAC) and UV/visible spectrophotometry with partial least square regression (UV/VIS-PLS) are powerful, sensitive, rapid, and non-destructive tools to determine the degree of aromaticity and other fingerprint chemical functional groups in food products and bioenergy feedstocks.  Both EEM/PARAFAC and UV/VIS-PLS are under-utilized in the characterization of sugar feedstocks for industrial-scale bioenergy/bioproduct production.  This study utilized EEM/PARAFAC and UV/VIS-PLS techniques to determine the polyphenol and other secondary products in sweet sorghum and sugarcane juice samples.  The presentation will describe (i) inner filtering, scattering, and other analytical parameters unique to the juice samples and (ii) modification of EEM/PARAFAC and UV/VIS-PLS to simpler method for industrial applications.
