Abstract:
High input agriculture has put a strain on water, nutrient, and environmental resources to maintain economic yields. Innovative integrated crop/livestock conservation systems do exit that allow for high yields of row crops with reduced inputs (water/nutrients) while providing ecosystem services for long term sustainability. This paper will discuss how year round cash crops/cover crops/livestock integration can be the future for agriculture providing the next significant step after conservation tillage and cover crops in not only preserving farm land but enhancing it while providing risk managment for the next generation of farmers.
