Session Description: Soil received long-awaited recognition as at the COP 21 meeting held December 2015 in Paris.  Among the action items to support farms was the "4/1000 Initiative: Soils for Food Security and Climate." The 4/1000 initiative aims to protect and increase soil carbon stocks, there-by achieving multiple goals: greenhouse gas (nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide) reductions, enhanced soil health, productive and resilient agriculture. The session will provide information on the inititative, discuss feasibility of the goals, review national and international research efforts, identify knowledge gaps that may impeded increasing carbon stocks. What needs to happen to meet carbon sequestration goal?  What are the most promising management among soil uses (e.g., croplands, wetlands, forests, etc?). Perspectives from policy-makers, Non-profit and private industry and Reseach will be presented.
