Format: Oral Symposium
Keywords: Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Patents and Plant Breeding

Session Description: Brief presentations will describe the plant variety protection form of intellectual property rights (IPR) including Plant Variety Protection  and patents (both utility and  plant patents).   Most of the session will be devoted to a panel composed of representatives of different sectors (private large and small scale; and pubic/academic).  Panelists will discuss implications of IPR for plant breeding for various agricultural systems; and answer questions from the audience.  The session will be an opportunity for students to discuss IPR with experts such as IPR attorneys, IPR users, and others.  The session will be organized by USDA’s Office of the Chief Scientist, in response to participant comments received at an introductory session last year. Opinions during the discussion will be those of the speaker; not necessarily of USDA.
