Title: Symposium--Counting Carbon on the Farm: Science, System, and Support

Organizer: Maysoon M. Mikha
Lead Community Sponsor: Soil Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Community
Cosponsor:
Community Cosponsor: Global Climate Change Community
Format: Oral Symposium
Keywords: GHG emissions and GHG reductions/C sequestration

Session Description: Agriculture is a significant source of GHG emissions as well as a potential sink for CO2 though C sequestration in soils and biomass.  GHG mitigation potential in the agriculture sector is receiving increased attention from policy makers and industry.  A major challenge is developing robust and practical measurement, monitoring and verification systems to quantify GHG reductions/C sequestration.  Such systems are key to support policies and incentives for producers to adopt practices that contribute to GHG mitigation, e.g., through governmental programs, participation in C offset projects or low-carbon food production.  The symposium will focus on research, development, and applications of farm to project-scale systems to support GHG reductions from soils and land use systems.
