Keywords: Law and Regulation and Nutrient Management

Session Description: With a growing demand and requirement for water quality improvements across the country, the nutrient management planning landscape is evolving from a voluntary best management practice to that of a regulatory requirement enforceable by local, state, and federal agencies.  Additionally, 3rd party lawsuits are being used as a tool to set judicial precedents that have national implications.  This session is focused on covering:

  • Different regulatory approaches around the country
  • Overview of current president setting legal cases (Yakima, IA, etc.)
  • How 3rd party lawsuits are being used in the absence of regulation
  • What regulations mean for agronomists and farmers
  • Research opportunities / information gaps - How science is – or isn’t – being utilized
  • Ways for ASA members to engage in the process
  • Farmer opportunities inside stiffer regulation - Water quality trading, cost-share programs
