In the last 50 years, human population growth has experienced an increase that has never seen before. As this trend is expected to continue in the rise, there is a necessity to sustainably increase our food and fiber production and generate alternative renewable fuel sources. The Ecological Intensification system, described as “a system that satisfies the anticipated increase in food demand while meeting acceptable standards of environmental quality” (Cassman, 1999), has the potential to accomplish these goals.
