Abstract:
The proposed online web and mobile application (MWiscsoil) will integrate data from the soil, water and environmental sciences using a new approach that combines concepts from geo-computing, geospatial techniques, and statistics. MWiscsoil is intended to bridge the knowledge gap in GIScience, Geography, Soil and other environmental sciences by integrating spatial database management, programming, and mapping technologies in a collaborative web and mobile environment. This project was initiated to develop a web and mobile-based hybrid modern visualization system, modern online global environmental data exchange and visualization system, utilizing digital soil survey products (for instance STATSGO and SSURGO in the USA) and existing data (published scientific data). Within this system, both mobile and web interfaces will be used as a management tool to support various functions, including selection of properties and management, such as soil fertility and tillage. Additionally, the web interface will also allow the user to input their own data, which will be stored in the database and then accessible through both the web and mobile interface by other users. As an initial case study, a beta system was developed to support selected soil management practices for researchers, extension specialists, and farmers. Soil management recommendations and predictions were placed according to statistical analysis of nearest research outputs. MWiscsoil was implemented using the Java language, Google Map APIs, and android mobile SDKs. Although not the only online soil survey application, this application is different from other available since it incorporates information of value to end-users, including soil and crop management, and environmental impacts.
