The Effect of Fungicide on Seed Germination

Abstract:

Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that digest food externally and absorb nutrients directly through their cell walls. They are the major decomposers of organic materials in the soil. Fungi are, by far, the most important plant pathogen with over 8,000 species shown to cause disease. The aim of our research is to determine the effect of fungi on the germination of winter wheat seeds. Additionally, we are trying to understand if we were to plant a mixture of both fungicide treated and untreated seeds, will the treated seeds act as a “protection” to the untreated seeds. To test our hypothesis, three trials were conducted in which we compared the rate of germination of untreated vs. fungicide treated winter wheat seeds. To further test our hypothesis, we plan to conduct the same experiment in the field or green house, where the temperature and environment are more suitable for accurate results.
