Abstract:
The Iowa State Agronomy Club highly values education of future agronomists and active community members. Three years ago our members saw a need to educate young people about agronomy so their interest may be sparked in agriculture. With a goal to develop future agronomists and agriculturally literate citizens we reached out to the 4-H program in Iowa, extending an invitation to 4th-8th grade members to come to Iowa State University and learn the science behind agronomy. We hosted in April 2017 for the third time, a Saturday filled with fun interactive, hands on activities to teach students about agronomic principles. These sessions were developed and lead by club members. Students learned about the importance of genetics in agriculture, germination, in season management, water quality, and harvest estimates. The last session was meal packaging for local food banks in the Ames area. Our main goal was to establish a plant to plate theme where students could fully see how seed ends up on your plate for dinner. The day ended with students learning how drones are used in agriculture and eating a meal provided by the club. We look forward to continually improving and expanding this event entitled Experience Agronomy Event.
