Session Description: Emerging contaminants include myriad of unconventional contaminants that are typically not regulated or routinely monitored, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, engineered nanoparticles, antibiotic resistance genes, etc. Emerging contaminants are widely found in natural and agricultural ecosystems. Their occurrence, distribution, transformation, fate and transport in soil, water and plant systems are critical to accurate assessment of their environmental and health risk and impact. Many knowledge gaps still remain in these areas and warrant further research, such as sorption in soils, uptake by microorganisms and plants, in-plant metabolism and transformation, interaction with soil, water or plant microbiomes, and transport with water flows.
