Session Description: Most of the irrigation water needs is met from the limited groundwater available in aquifers. When the aquifers took many years to fill, water withdrawals for irrigations exceed their recharge rates, threatening the sustainability of irrigated agriculture. For sustaining irrigated agriculture for feeding the world, there is an urgent need for investigating, understanding, and developing management practices that potentially increase water use efficiency in crop production systems and thus reduce excessive withdrawals of water from the depleting aquifers. This symposium brings together scientists across the world and discuss their research in this direction and recommend further research and farm adaptations.
