Session Description: The scope of soil physics has evolved over the last 30 years from traditional agricultural applications in irrigation management, crop science and agronomy to include many other disciplines in earth and environmental sciences, including in ecology, hydrology, geology, biogeochemistry, engineering, climate science, and plant sciences. The session will review this evolution and present relevant examples and near-future opportunities for the soil physics discipline that largely contribute to transdisciplinary research approaches and outcomes. It is organized to celebrate the research and service career of Jan Hopmans, who recently retired from his academic career at the University of California Davis.
