Session Description: Evapotranspiration results from complex and dynamic interactions of soil physical, chemical, and biological processes and crop growth. Agricultural system simulation models that realistically simulate ET are tools for evaluating impacts of irrigation water management. However, the AgMIP reports that substantial variation exists in simulated ET among agricultural system models If these models are not able to simulate ET accurately, associated results of all other related processes are also questionable. These findings point towards the need for modelers to reexamine and revise ET simulation algorithms, test against precisely measured data, document appropriate model behavior, and enhance them for research applications.
