Session Description: Conservation agriculture practices (crop rotation, cover crops, permanent crop, and conservation tillage) were initially developed to combat soil erosion; however, they can also optimize crop production, promote soil health by keeping soil organic matter and nutrients in place, and by improving water and air quality. This technical session covers recent research findings, challenges (e.g. soil compaction, loss of soil organic carbon, increased CO2 and N2O emissions) and opportunities (enhanced soil carbon sequestration, reduced N2O and CO2 emissions, improved ecosystem services and enhanced agricultural sustainability) for the adaption of conservation agricultural practices that vary across soils, climates and latitudes.
