Session Description: Soils are the foundation of every ecosystem and recovery of their function is required for successful ecological reclamation and restoration. Functional parameters such as carbon fixation, quantity, and quality, microbial community structure and diversity, and biogeochemical cycling should be considered during restoration. In the reclamation environment, these must be carefully designed to meet the requirements of the organisms that existed pre-disturbance. One way to ensure success of restoration/reclamation would be to compare these parameters to their equivalents in reference ecosystems recovering from disturbance.
