Session Description: Forage crops, when “Hayed-out”, can limit the crop growing season duration, limit crop water demand, and reduce drought stress due to deficient available water compared with later maturing grain crops that would sustain potential yield reductions. Many potential cover crops are also desirable forage crops that are harvested mechanically or by grazing and as a dual-use soil protecting cover-crop add cropping system value. We invite presentations that explore dryland forage cropping systems, for example, characterizing water and nutrient use dynamics of dryland forage and grain production or economics and best management of dryland forage or dual-use cover-crop/forage cropping systems.
