Session Description: In light of increasing use of cropping systems models to address complex questions regarding nitrogen use efficiency, soil carbon changes in the long term, and environment sustainability, it becomes very crucial to validate and/or improve existing root algorithms in crop models. Advances made in 3-D root architectural models, and new technologies to measure roots can both inform improvements in crop models. This symposium will bring together root and crop modelers and experimentalists to review current approaches, identify gaps to inform experimental research and discuss efficient ways of coupling simple with complex models to increase prediction and explanatory power
