Session Description: Crop models can achieve reasonable prediction accuracy, but its application is limited because of the amount of expertise and data required for calibrations. New technologies such as machine learning can increase efficient use of crop modeling. Creation of meta-models is one example. Use of machine learning to create new functions for incorporation into models is another example. The goal of this symposium is to bring together experts in crop modeling and machine learning to discuss advances and challenges in coupling these two approaches from a cropping systems perspective and identify efficient ways to increase explanatory and predictive power of models.
