Session Description: Global meat demand is projected to double by 2050, requiring more animal production. Animal agriculture has substantial consequences to soil, water, and air quality. This interdisciplinary session will explore opportunities and challenges of animal agriculture in safeguarding our soil, water and air resources, including: innovative methods to recycle animal manure; best management practices that reduce risk of nutrient and pathogen release to the environment and emissions of ammonia, H2S, VOCs, aerosols, and greenhouses gases; beneficial effects of animal manure application on soil, plant, and human health; agronomic efficiencies in manure-based production systems; issues around food safety related to animal agriculture.
