Session Description: Micron- and nano-sized particles are important to the fate and bioavailability of plant nutrients and contaminantsin soils or air. It is often difficult to gain a mechanistic understanding of processes governing the retention and mobility of chemicals. Long term solutions for combating climate change, extreme events and natural hazards require basic research focusing on understanding fundamental reaction processes happening at the particulate matter-water or -air interfaces using advanced spectroscopic and microscopic instruments. The molecular tools will allow us to advance agricultural or non-agricultural systems to minimize inputs while optimizing production, economy, and protecting human and ecosystem health.
