Session Description: Agricultural research has increasingly shifted from a focus maximizing food production to a focus on producing food while supporting other ecosystem services. Sustainable intensification (SI) emerged to address this broader vision. SI emphasizes enhancing beneficial ecological interactions for pest, nutrient, and water management to support production, farmers’ livelihoods and ecosystem services. This symposium will address the following questions: Where has SI been successfully applied and how? Is the adoption of SI having the intended impacts? What are barriers to the adoption of SI approaches? Are there shifts needed to enhance the significance of SI in a changing climate (e.g., resilience)?
