Session Description: The expansion of instrumented networks and nodes across the globe is driven by the growing desire for improved environmental data to better validate and advance regional and global modeling efforts. Soil surface and subsurface conditions form a critical boundary condition for climate and land surface modeling. Measurement approaches for determination of these soil physical properties and processes continue to improve and advance. This session aims to highlight recent advances in sensing of permittivity for soil water content, thermal and chemical properties, texture, structure and density in addition to the determination of processes such as surface and subsurface fluxes.
