Session Description: Agricultural farming systems of the US Southern Great Plains (SGP) and similar transitional lands between humid and arid zones in other parts of the world are important to global food and nutritional security. However, persistent yield stagnation, large yield gaps, and low water- and nutrient-use efficiencies plague rainfed-cropping system in the SGP. This session will provide an overview of water and nitrogen management in rainfed cropping systems and offer pathways for improvement. The presenters will discuss challenges, opportunities, and limitations for improving water and nitrogen use efficiencies in rainfed systems, with special emphasis on the SGP.
