Session Description: As the world's population expands and becomes more heavily concentrated in Africa, productivity of the continent's agricultural systems will need to improve. In recognition of this fact, and of the major ongoing revolution in African agriculture, OCP North America has launched the Agricultural Scientists for Africa special group under ASA/SSSA/CSSA. It seeks to hold a cross-divisional and cross-society special session at the 2020 annual meeting in Phoenix, AZ, highlighting opportunities for innovation and collaboration to promote excellence in African agronomy. The primary co-organizers of ASA are the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) based in Morocco. ASA/SSSA/CSSA co-sponsoring Divisions/Sections include: Global Agronomy; Agronomy in Africa; Agronomic Solutions for Smallholder Community; Agronomic Production Systems; Plant Nutrients and Soil Analysis; Soil and Water Management and Conservation; Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition; Nutrient Management; Soil Biology and Biochemistry; Soil Chemistry; Soils and Environmental Quality; Global Climate Change.This special session will emphasize the theme of excellence in African agronomy. It will both facilitate scientific exchange and build collaborations among agricultural scientists within the continent as well as across the globe. A special session featuring 7-8 high-profile speakers (180 minutes; 20-25 min/speaker) presenting inspiring topics on African Agricultural transformation with a focus on integration of biophysical, socioeconomic, and the cultural dimensions to agricultural value chain fortification. A consecutive oral and poster session (includes graduate student competition) of selected submissions from public and private sector (150 minutes; 15 min/talk). Monetary awards will be given for first, second and third place. Presenters will be judged by volunteers who are a part of the Global Agronomy Section and Agronomy in Africa community. The winners will be announced at the Global Agronomy Section business meeting, if possible, and via email to the communities after the annual meeting.
