Session Description: Mycorrhizal fungi live at the interface between plants and soil and play a critical role in plant health and nutritional status. During the past decade, a substantial number of studies have found associations between the dominant type of mycorrhizal fungi present in an ecosystem and biogeochemical transformations in soil. Many of these studies have focused on the turnover of soil nitrogen but it has become apparent that mycorrhizal fungi may also be important in soil carbon dynamics. This symposium features several of the top researchers in an attempt to synthesize the mechanisms underlying the connection between the traits of mycorrhizal fungi activities and ecosystem-level responses.
