127 Tools of Engagement: Soil Quality Indicators in Action

Oral Session
S11 Soils & Environmental Quality
In contrast to “normal” symposia/sessions, we would like to hold a hands-on, demonstration style session that would be open to the public. In essence, this would be an opportunity for our colleagues to highlight innovative tests that measure dynamic soil properties/soil quality/soil health that have been used successfully as teaching/extension tools. A good example is the Cornell Sprinkle Infiltrometer (rainfall simulator). This instrument is taken out to the field and used to demonstrate how readily water will move into the soil. It helps to identify compaction problems and other impediments to free movement of water through the profile. It is a very effective demonstration tool that then generates productive discussions of how to alter soil management practices to address the problem.
