Increased interest in perennial grains and perennial staple crops has led to proliferation of research and literature on topics ranging from breeding to their enhancement of ecosystem services. We conducted an extensive review of the existing literature on perennial grains and perennial staple crops to compile a bibliography that we then analyzed using a variety of methods, including analyses of metadata and topic modeling. As well, we researched non-scientific bodies of literature, including anthropological literature of a number of locations in sub-Saharan Africa, to identify crops that have traditionally been used as perennials for the purpose of exploring how novel perennial crops might be used in such contexts.
