New Avenues to Continuing Education for the Certified Professional.

The SSSA Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS) program identifies the standards of basic knowledge, professional practice, and professional conduct for practicing soil scientists. The CPSS must meet minimal competency standards for performance objectives in a variety of soil science disciplines. Certified professional soil scientists practice in many arenas: mining, oil, gas and brownfields reclamation/restoration; bioremediation; on-site and municipal wastewater treatment and reclamation; biosolids and compost; soil mapping and landscape evaluation and interpretation; wetlands delineation and design; urban planning; stormwater planning and management; nutrient management; and agriculture, among others. 

As soil scientists expand their practice beyond traditional arenas, new topics and approaches are needed to provide the continuing education required to be current in the discipline and maintain certification.
The Society is developing webinars in nontraditional disciplines for the practicing soil scientist, and is exploring partnerships with societies in related disciplines to provide information that is helpful, timely, and necessary to promote the profession and personal careers.
