Abstract:
Maize-N is computer simulation model that deploys systematic and mechanistic analyses of soil properties, climatic information, and crop system characteristics for a given field. It is composed of four modules: 1) a maize growth dynamics and yield module for estimating crop N uptake dynamics and final yield potential and its variation, 2) a soil carbon (C) and N mineralization module for estimating the indigenous soil N supply dynamics, 3) a soil water module for estimating crop water use and soil water dynamics in the rooting zone for estimating potential of N leaching, and 4) a yield response module for estimating economically optimal N rate. Compared with conventional N rate recommendation schemes, the Maize-N model provides an analysis of biophysical and climatic parameters that govern N supply, N-use efficiency (NUE), and uptake in maize production systems. Maize-N also estimates the season and site-specific yield potential for today’s modern hybrids. The Maize-N model provides a knowledge-based decision-aid that is specific to a field but global in scope.
