Abstract:
Instinct® II (nitrapyrin CS) has been applied with nitrogen fertilizers to effectively reduce nitrification in corn fields throughout the Midwest and Southern US.  However, there has been little use of Instinct II in spring and winter wheat fields, that encompasses approximately 5 million and 15 million hectares, respectively in the US.  Since 2012, Dow AgroSciences has established field research trials to characterize the agronomic and yield benefits of Instinct® II throughout the key wheat growing regions of the northern US.  In these trials, Instinct II was evaluated in combination with various nitrogen application rates, production practices and fertilizer sources.  The results from these trials demonstrate that Instinct II has a positive impact on wheat yield without reduction of protein content.  Instinct II was also shown to increase the amount and duration of NH4+ retention in the root zone as compared to the non-stabilized fertilizer treatments.
