Abstract:
Having been both an expert witness and an expert consultant, I have found the latter to be more rewarding, less stressful, and in many cases more valuable to the legal team in litigation and other legal challenges.  By definition the expert witness is subject to challenges and comparisons of credentials, depositions, and cross examinations.  The expert consultant on the other hand, rarely is subject to those issues, and primarily provides the legal team with clarifications of complicated scientific principles, appropriate questions to ask of expert witenesses, and insights into what an expert witness is saying or trying to avoid saying. Expert witnesses are IN the hotseat; Expert consultants make the seat hotter.
