52 Symposium--Manure Management: Measuring and Mitigating Nutrient Losses and Gaseous Emissions

ASA Section: Environmental QualityEmissions of greenhouse gases, methane, volatile organic compounds, and other substances from livestock production can have negative implications for air, soil and water quality. Runoff and leachate from livestock housing, manure storages and land-applied manure presents environmental risks to surface and sub-surface waters due to transport of nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals and other contaminants. Accurate measurement and effective mitigation of emissions and runoff/leachate from livestock systems is challenged by high spatial and temporal variability in manure, environmental and management characteristics. The purpose of this session is to address current research related to measurement and mitigation of nutrient and contaminant losses from livestock systems and land applied manure.
