Abstract:
There are many interacting factors affecting nutrient cycling in grazing system. The overall goal of the project is to evaluate physical and biological processes affecting the transport, transformations, losses, and storage of N and C pulses induced by grazing. These pulses can include urine, dung, litter, and trampled vegetation and maybe influenced spatially and temporally by the grazing strategy. The study was conducted at the Barta Brothers Ranch in the meadows of the Sandhills region of Nebraska. The treatments included ultra-high stocking density grazing, low stocking density grazing, haying, and control with no grazing. Soil samples were taken annually for the last seven years to evaluate changes in bulk soil C and POC fractions. In addition, dung decomposition, and soil nutrient changes from dung pats were measured. We will report the nutrient cycling model of this grazed system as well as report on the temporal changes in soil C.
