Abstract:
Cover crops offer many benefits for improving soil health and providing ecosystem services but the costs involved in establishment, termination, and potential negative effect on cash crop yield, can discourage farmers from using them. Many cover crop species are edible for consumption by livestock and produce excellent forage. Therefore, one option for producers who are interested in improving soil health is to offset the costs involved with cover crops by selecting crops that can be grazed, produce large biomass and quality forage while also providing soil benefits.
