Abstract:
There is a growing interest in the application of biochar to agricultural soils in Brazil; however, little is known regarding the effects of this soil amendments on the fate of indaziflam, an herbicide widely used in sugarcane and soybean production. However, there are limited studies dealing with the effect of biochar on the behavior of pesticides applied to crops. In this work, indaziflam (14C-labeled) sorption will be evaluated on biochars prepared from various feedstock materials, and both sorption and degradation will be quantified in select biochar-amended soils. Soils with varying textures and organic matter contents from Northern, Central, and Southern Brazil will be used to study the impact of biochar on indaziflam fate and transport in these disparate agricultural regions. Although scarce, studies involving herbicides behavior in with the addition biochar soils are also critical for assessing the efficiency of control of weeds in sugarcane as high sorption rates can compromise the herbicide efficiency. The results of this study will serve as a guide for herbicide efficacy coupled to biochar application for Brazilian soils.
