Abstract:
Agronomy Club at Virginia Tech is one of the oldest clubs on campus. Agronomy club has over 30 active members. Over the last several decades, more importantly, for the last several years, the club has been involved in many community-based services. Some of the services that the agronomy club has provided to the community include: working with local berry farmers to solve problems associated with low soil fertility, crop residue, and weed control; working with 4-H agents to train several 4-H clubs with seed identifications and plant identification, The Big Events, which allowed the Agronomy Club to help several homeowners with home improvement projects. Overall, Agronomy Club was very effective in engaging the club members with the community through community-based services. In addition, the Agronomy Club has placed an emphasis on professional development. Representatives, from local co-ops to basic manufacturers, have visited to speak on various roles in the industry and possible internship opportunities. By continuing to cultivate relationships with members of the industry, opportunities to join organizations such as the National Corn Growers Association and the Virginia Grain Producer’s Association have arisen. The Agronomy Club is committed to producing alumni with a deep understanding and respect of production Agriculture while possessing qualities and experiences that will allow them to excel in their futures.
