Oklahoma State Agronomy Club Grows Community Garden

With the help from one of the professors in the Plant and Soil Sciences Department, the Oklahoma State University Agronomy Club is growing a community garden. The main purpose of the community garden is providing food to local food banks in Stillwater. This allows the Agronomy Club the opportunity to give back to the community and also interact with many different people as the program progresses. The land that we are using for the garden was donated by a local church in Stillwater. The objective for the garden is growing the vegetables as sustainably as possible, so that we do not need to apply synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Instead of using synthetic fertilizers for nutrition for the plants, we have two big compost piles composed of hay, manure, newspaper, and grass clippings to satisfy the nutritional needs for the plants. We also supply nutrients by planting crimson clover on the garden plot to fix nitrogen in the ground for next year's planting. Some of the vegetables in the garden include tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers.  Next year we plan to incorporate more diversity in our vegetables. This program will greatly help our community by providing food for those that are falling into unfortunate times.
