Bugwood: A Plant Image Archive with Multiple Applications.

The Bugwood Image Database was founded in 1994 for the purpose of making a source of high-quality, high-resolution images available for anyone working on non-commercial projects.  Although the primary use of the images has been illustration in publications, it has also served as a repository to preserve image collections, a reliable online resource, and a reference collection for identifying organisms.  New projects are being explored to use additional technology to further leverage an existing resource and guide its expansion.  These new endeavors include vouchering of images with specimen data, better geolocation of images, inclusion of species interaction information, annotation of images to provide commentary from other experts, and an image recruitment system to better indicate what images are needed by various users.  These enhancements combined with improved web services to provide automated delivery of images and information will allow for utilization in other applications such as smart automated plant identification systems and early detection information systems.
