HELP: About the Search Engine

(Go to the search page and search help.)

This CD is set to automatically open when the disc is inserted into your CD or DVD drive. If your computer is not set to autorun or you do not have permissions to autorun, you may begin accessing the files by opening START.htm in the root of your CD drive or by using the navigation links above.

System Requirements

You will need to have a browser that runs Java, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer version 3 or later, or Netscape Navigator version 3 or later, or Safari on a Macintosh. For some common browsers such as Internet Explorer, installation of the Java Virtual Machine (VM) is optional. If not installed, then an attempt to run the search may prompt the installation of Java. See below for information on installing Java VM.

Of the mainstream browsers, Microsoft Internet Explorer is generally better because it allows the best word highlighting with navigation arrows. However the local active content restrictions of Windows XP (SP2), Vista or Windows 7 may require users to switch off a security setting to use FindinSite-CD. Please see the special instructions for Windows users, that includes how to tell if you are using Service Pack 2.

In some browsers, a pop up window appears briefly to highlight the search words with navigation arrows. If you have a pop-up blocker you may need to change your settings to allow pop-ups in order to use the search.

About this CD's Search function

Help for using Search is included on the Search page.

Since the search on this CD uses Java applets, you will need a Java Virtual Machine (VM) for your browser. A Java VM provides a standard runtime environment to run Java programs safely. Most computers already have Java, but if you are unable to use the Search, then you will need to download and install a Java VM. Please see the information below.

About JavaTM VM

To test that the JRE is installed, enabled and working properly on your computer, run this test applet from the Sun Microsystems web site: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp

Install Java VM:

Macintosh notes:

Mac OS X includes the Sun Java VM for use with the Safari browser. Update this using the System Properties Software Update feature: the "OS X 10.2.6" and "Java 1.4.1 Update 1" updates are recommended, though large.

Netscape 7.1 for Mac OS X includes the Sun Java 1.3.1 VM - it does not use the above OS X Java 1.4.1.

For Classic Mac OS 8.1 and 9, download the Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ).

For further information, see Apple's Java site.

Accessing Installation files for all Operating Systems:

You have two options for accessing the installation files for Java. Depending on your user permissions, you may need to contact your Systems Administrator to install the Java VM on your computer.

  1. Automatically download and install from Sun Microsystems, Inc.: Going to http://java.com/en/download/ will automatically detect your operating system for the appropriate download and run the installation.

  2. Choose your installation manually and install from Sun Microsystems, Inc.: Going to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp will allow you to select your operating system for the appropriate download and save or run the installation.
