Quantification of crop evapotranspiration and water use efficiency using 27 crop models.
Abstract: Crop simulation models are commonly used to study the response of crop evapotranspiration (ET) and water use to environmental factors. Twenty-seven wheat models have been tested in a Wheat Pilot Study as part of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP; www.agmip.org). AgMIP aims to provide more robust estimates of climate impacts on crop yields and agricultural trade, including estimates of associated uncertainties. Simulations were carried out for detailed field experiments from four contrasting environments in The Netherlands, Argentina, India and Australia. The sensitivities of modelled ET responses to a range of single and combined soil, management and climate conditions were compared. Implications on use of models for evaluating water use efficiency in relation to varying environmental conditions, the need for a multi-model approach and model improvements are discussed.
